Life, March 2010
Mar 26th
I felt like doing a general life update type post, so lets give it a go. I can’t say things have been too exciting around here. Life is generally boring, though there have been a few highlights in the past couple of weeks. Lets start with what takes up most of my free time.
In WoW (World of Warcraft), I’ve managed to get a group together who were able to clear the first wing of the new raid Ice Crown Citadel. During that time I managed to complete the 4 piece set bonus for my Resto Druid. Unfortunately, before I have even had the chance to use it, several key players in my raiding group have decided that they need to take a break from the game. I was told by my guild leader that they “Quit for personal reasons,” however I don’t think they can really quit the game. They seemed to be too into it to leave for long. Oh well. This probably is a good thing. I’ve been growing somewhat bored with the game. Though I’ll miss the players things will keep moving on.
My job at Blue Mountain Arts is still pretty laid back, and if I could just solve the issue of my right wrist still hurting, things would be just fine. After a couple of crazy months of getting caught up with various reporting, product scanning, image conversion, and creating a Blast Mailer I’m finally all caught up. The only project left on my plate is a complete redesign of our intranet. I’m really excited about this project, but I’m not sure where I want to take the site.
My social life is finally a bit more than my usual work/WoW intake. I have some friends who are hanging out on Fridays and on Saturdays I get to do some Dungeons and Dragons, which is always good for a laugh. I do kinda enjoy getting out, and hopefully I can break out of this semi antisocial shell that I’ve acquired.
My health is pretty good, though I am starting to see signs that I need to go to the gym. Mainly, clothes aren’t fitting quite right and I run out of breath pretty easily. Both I attribute to quitting cigarettes and just being lazy. I’m thinking that in the next few weeks I’ll be making some trips to the gym.
I think I’m going to try and post just random updates to keep whomever informed.
How to find work
Dec 17th
Over and over I see people complaining on how difficult it is to find work or that they aren’t making enough money or say they don’t like their job. Quite frankly, I’m tired of seeing it. I know it is difficult, and I’ve been there before. I’ve done the 6 month job search scrounging off friends and barely making ends meet. If I had know about some of these resources, or had read these tips I would have had a job much, much faster.
First off, before I get into the actual looking for work, I’m going to reference some good tips. They all do come from the same site, www.workawesome.com, and it all is GOOD information. I would strongly recommend skimming through the site at some time since here I am only going to link to the important bits about finding a job and what will help.
The Cover Letter
Let us start with the cover letter. (http://workawesome.com/your-job/how-to-write-a-cover-letter-that-gets-read/) It is well know that when a résumé is submitted with a cover letter it is more likely to be read and given consideration. Though, if you write your cover letter poorly then you will more then likely have your résumé trashed. Make sure you check your spelling and grammar and write a cover letter tailored to the job. Stay away from templates.
To quote the article: “Put yourself in the shoes of the poor slob who is slogging through hundreds of these letters. Shake that person up. Be different. Use your own words. Demonstrate that you take initiative. Learn about the company and show the company something about you.
Above all, be yourself. If they don’t like you for you, it’s not going to be a good job. And if they do like you for you, it’s going to be a blast”
The Résumé
With that said, let’s look at the résumé. (http://workawesome.com/your-job/beyond-the-cover-letter-resume-tips/) The number one tip here is to make it short and simple. Don’t let your résumé get larger then one page unless you have been in your career for more then 15 years. Any résumé that is over one page tends to not be fully read and is less likely to be considered.
Stop using “Fluff Text”! (i.e. “Advanced Customer Specialist” or “Data Support Evangelist”) It decreased the chance you will be looked at. This type of wording is confusing and does not explain what you did. Say things like “answered phones”, “data entry”, “on floor sales”, “flipped burgers”. This type of wording is short, sweet, and says exactly what you did.
Write your own résumé and check your spelling! Well, ok, if someone else writes your résumé then at least go back and reword it. Use your own voice and know what’s there. This will help when you snag that interview.
From their perspective
Now that you know a little more about putting together your cover letters and résumés, it’s time to take a brief look into what a hiring manager looks for. (http://workawesome.com/office-life/the-search-for-an-awesome-candidate/) Since this is not a topic I’m too familiar with, since I’ve never been in charge of hiring people, I will simply encourage you to look at the link provided.
The Era of Social Media
Ok, I don’t have a link for this, but this should be common knowledge. If you have an online presence and it is associated with your name in any way, chances are that they will find you! Your Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter pages are open to the world. If you have questionable content on either then make sure your privacy settings are set so only your friends can see the content, or simply delete the questionable posts. Also, don’t set your profile picture to show you half-dressed, drunk, post-drunk, friends did something to you when you passed out, stoned, etc. This does not display the type of image that a hiring company is looking for… and if it is, chances are you don’t want to work for them.
Tools and Resources to Use
Indeed: http://www.indeed.com/ – My absolute favorite resource! It pulls job information that matches your search criteria from hundreds of different sources from Monster to Craigslist and Various other sites. Once you search you can refine your search by Salary, Title, Company, Location, Job Type and Employer/Recruiter. What’s more, you can setup alerts so you can stay up to date with any new job postings.
Linked In: http://www.linkedin.com/ – This is the Facebook of Job Sites. Built around the principal of Social Networking and building contacts, this site will help you find industry contacts which will help to put a foot in the door.
Monster: http://www.monster.com/ – Put your information here and keep it up to date. You don’t have to say that you are looking for work but this is almost an industry standard for finding potential employees.
Craigslist: http://www.craigslist.org/ – For many, this has replaced the classified ads section of the newspaper. Lots of people post here; it’s just a matter of getting a résumé and cover letter out.
Your Feet
This is a highly under looked resource for many. Since we have come to rely on computers to do everything for use we overlook many businesses that only advertise that they need help in their stores. The biggest example of this is in the fast food and retail industry. Many times they don’t even advertise that they are looking because they receive so many applications a day. If you are looking for work and are in a store, take the time to ask a manager if they are hiring and if you can get an application to fill out.
If you are looking for work, keep copies of a modified with you when you go to retail stores. This résumé should show general work experience and skills. If you get an application while in the store you should fill it out there and submit your résumé. This prevents you from delaying and shows the potential employer that you are serious about getting work.
Local Temp Agencies
Search the area you live in and see if you can find any local Temp Agencies. Places such as Office Team and Kelley Services specialize in finding temporary employees to fill odd jobs. If you need money and don’t feel like committing to any one place then this is the route to go. On many occasions I’ve got into a Temp Agency and come out with a job that nets me about $200-300 for a few days of work. Also if you work hard the company you were temping at may hire you, or call you back at a higher rate.
Last Thoughts
There are many resources that you can use, and finding a job is not always easy. If you persevere and do the work you will find a job faster then you think. Put yourself out there when looking, and by you I mean YOU! Don’t show yourself off as something you are not and be mindful of the people you are thinking about working for. If your personalities don’t match and if you can’t stand the work, KEEP LOOKING.
Setting goals
Oct 5th
Over the past few weeks/months/years I have mostly sat back and let whatever happens happen. I’m tired of this! Change is needed!
On the short list of things I need to change are my weight and not cooking dinner for myself. It’s an easy change, just buy the materials and visit the gym I’m subscribed to.
On my long list is my art, my blog, lifestyle, living conditions, and I want a place of my own. I have no idea what exactly I need to do to fulfill all of these.
Only time will tell…
Ahh delays
Mar 12th
Recently, the Camarilla has suffered from news that there will be a soft reset. This means that player will loose all of their experience points that they have gained from, potentially, years of play. They will all have to rebuild their characters from the ground up. This has caused many of the players to decide that they will not renew their membership, and in my Domain especially, almost 90% of the player base seems to be uninterested in continuing with the Camarilla. Due to these events I have decided that a delay from working further on the CamDenver site would be prudent that I need to clean up what I have now and get things out, though a delay is still being considered.
I plan to focus more on my efforts to create a custom theme for this site. Honestly I’m tired of using what other’s have provided and I really want to build something for myself. Maybe even it’ll motivate me to begin working on my artwork again. More >
Next up?!
Feb 12th
Since I am so close to finishing the CamDenver site I feel it is important to begin thinking ahead to the next project. So, what do I work on next? Well this truely does depend on what is really influencing me at the time. The first option is to actually design my own theme for this blog, then add features so I can display my art.
I also have the option of developing my blog for warcraft. To me this seems like it would be a more enjoyable alternative. I love playing the game so I might as well put my thoughts and various points of experience towards it.
The biggest issue I have with doing either is that i’m not sure how I want them to look >.< I am hopeful however that inspiration will strike!
CamDenver Status Update
Feb 10th
So this weekend I managed to get a lot of work done on the CamDenver site in a relatively short time.
Currently I have the layout completed, suckerfish style main menu, basic typography, and a few tweeks to the general design.
I just need to tweek the typography, adjust the sidebar, and setup the footer. Once I finish that, I can move on to plugins and custom php.
CamDenver
Feb 3rd
I’ve begun working on the rebuild of http://www.camdenver.com and so far I have to saythat it’s an interesting process to go through. I am currently running the site off the Joomla platform. While powerful, it is too difficult forms to use as a CMS.
The purpose of the CamDenver site is to provide a portal for players to garner information about upcoming games and provide any additional, or useful info as it relates to the Camarilla and roleplaying. There are at the least five features that the site needs to have.
- A calendar that shows events
- A detail of the event showing location
- General game and domain announcements
- Contact information ala about page
- Hosting for the monthly newsletter
Most if not all of these features are simple enough to implement. I’ve given myself a deadline of Feb 28th to accomplish the transition. If all goes well this will happen.
New Year, New Resolve
Jan 5th
So the new year begins and I’ve come to realize that I need to make a resolution and stick to it… for once. Many things have come to mind and I’ve unceremoniously dismissed them. What has stuck, and what I plan on attempting, is to:
- Do something creative every week and spend at least an hour doing it
- Design working layouts for this site and my other blog
- Post regularly to my blogs
I’m hoping that I’ll eventually be posting to one blog or the other on a daily basis, providing good solid content. I also hope that my design skills will also improve drastically by year end. So here’s to a new year and all that it can bring!
New Backend, Lighter Weight
Oct 29th
So I decided to switch from Joomla to WordPress, and to be quite honest I’m very pleased with it. I came to the realization that for my personal site I do just need a simple content system. I am still in the process of discovering all the the hidden features and the various steps needed for additional setup, but so far I like it’s simplicity.
Don’t get me wrong now, Joomla is a great content system and works great for the Denver Camarilla site. However when I was trying to setup a personal site for just myself to blog and post my portfolio I was finding it difficult to work with. WordPress seems to offer just what I need to simply and quickly get my own personal stuff up and running. I can also sum the backend of WordPress up in 3 words, So Freakin’ Simple. It also seems to use straight forward PHP as opposed to Joomla’s awkward functions.
I have to admit, I am getting very excited to play around with the template system. The one that I am currently using is a generic template offered at the WordPress site and is called SH Trocadero for those who are interested. Why am I using a theme I didn’t create, well simply put, it’s because I just set it up and haven’t had time to get things set up completely.
In other news I managed to complete to complete the work, so far, on the Camarilla of Denver site. I had to make the not so difficult decision to only really offer support for IE7 and FF3. I’m not getting paid for the site and am only doing it to be nice, so I don’t feel bad in the slightest. If I start to get complaints about the lack of support for someones browser I may take a deeper look into it.
Well… until next time,
*cheers*
Just a quickie
Oct 29th
So today I decided to play around a little bit more with my site and I add a quick little blog module and created a twitter account. Just to play around a bit. We’ll see where it goes from there. So far I’m liking the way things work.
I think I’m going to have to play around with the site design soon that way I can just focus on maintaining a blog. First however I have a commitment to the Denver Camarilla and getting their site up and running properly. I think I’m close, I just need to fix the stupid dropdown menu.
I think I may as well post with updates on how I achieve certian effects when I update this site. I would like to post something of worth and that might be useful to someone out there somewhere.
Well, here’s to the future.
Cheers.
